Horses for sale in Spain: Buying and selling horses in Spain

There’s something very particular about looking at horses for sale in Spain: you’re not just scrolling ads, you’re stepping into a culture where horses are woven into daily life, fiestas, and family traditions. From the romerías in Andalusia to the classical dressage schools in Jerez, horses here aren’t an accessory to riding – they’re part of identity. That atmosphere shapes how people buy and sell, how they train, and even how they talk about horses.

Spain’s market is dominated by PRE (Pura Raza Española, often called Andalusians), CDE (Caballo de Deporte Español – Spain’s sport horse registry), and a strong base of Cruzados (crossbreds), plus pockets of Anglo-Arabs and ponies. You’ll find everything from high-school dressage stallions in Seville, to honest all-rounders on small family yards in Castilla-La Mancha, to promising young jumpers around Madrid and Barcelona. Many yards are still family-run, and deals are often based as much on trust and reputation as on flashy videos. That can be wonderful if you know how to navigate it – and risky if you don’t.

What makes buying or selling horses in Spain unique is the mix of traditional horsemanship and a fast-growing international marketplace. Prices can be very competitive compared to northern Europe, especially for Iberian horses and young prospects, but the market is also quite fragmented. There’s no single central marketplace; instead you have local dealers, WhatsApp networks, regional auctions, and a growing number of professional brokers who specialise in connecting Spanish sellers with foreign buyers. If you understand how things work on the ground, Spain can be an excellent place to buy – and a very rewarding place to sell.

Buying horses in Spain – what you need to know

From a buyer’s point of view, Spain is attractive for three main reasons: quality, variety, and price. For PRE and Iberian crosses, Spain is still the source, and you can often find well-bred, nicely moving young horses from around 8,000–15,000€ that would cost significantly more once exported. Young CDE jumpers with decent pedigrees typically start around 10,000–20,000€ for 4–6 year olds, while seriously competitive dressage or jumping horses can range anywhere from 25,000€ up to six figures for established competition records. At the more affordable end, there are plenty of sensible leisure and hacking horses in the 4,000–8,000€ bracket, especially if you’re flexible on age, height, or colour.

Finding horses in Spain usually starts online: Spanish portals, Facebook groups, Instagram accounts of riders and breeders, and professional agents who curate selections from multiple yards. Many Spanish sellers are more comfortable with WhatsApp than formal email, so don’t be surprised if you’re sent a flurry of videos and voice notes. Viewing trips typically involve visiting several yards a day, often within a region: for example, a two-day loop around Seville, Córdoba, and Jerez can show you a lot of PRE and working equitation types, while Madrid and Catalonia lean more toward sport horses. There are also regional auctions, but for most international buyers, private sales or working with a trusted broker are more practical.

If you’re buying from abroad, factor in transport and export paperwork from the beginning rather than as an afterthought. Within the EU, it’s relatively straightforward: you’ll need an EU health certificate and professional transport; most established yards work regularly with transport companies who handle the logistics. For the UK, USA, or other non-EU countries, you’ll need to consider quarantine, blood tests, and shipping from hubs like Madrid or Barcelona. A reputable vet check is non-negotiable: in Spain, pre-purchase exams (reconocimiento veterinario) usually include a clinical exam, flexions, and basic x-rays, but the scope can vary. For horses under about 10,000€, it’s common to limit x-rays; for competition horses, a full set of 18–24 views is standard, and you can easily spend 400–1,000€ on vetting, depending on region and clinic.

The market in Spain is still quite “word of mouth,” and negotiation is expected. Asking prices often have some flexibility, especially if you’re paying quickly or buying more than one horse. Be clear about what you need: many Spanish horses are ridden in traditional tack, maybe not schooled in the same way as in northern Europe, but they can be very willing and trainable. Pay attention to footing, facilities, and how the horse behaves in different situations, not just in a tidy arena video. Use an independent vet, ask for existing x-rays if available, and make sure the name and microchip on the passport match the horse in front of you.

Everything about selling horses in Spain

From the selling side, Spain has a mixed domestic and international market. Locally, there is steady demand for leisure horses, working equitation types, and schoolmasters for riding clubs. Internationally, Spain is especially attractive to buyers looking for PRE and Iberian crosses for dressage, amateur competition, and pleasure riding, as well as to riders seeking reasonably priced young sport horses. Buyers come from the rest of the EU, the UK, the USA, and increasingly from the Middle East and Latin America, often specifically searching “horses for sale in Spain” or “PRE horses for sale in Spain” on Google and social media.

If you’re selling a horse in Spain, presentation is everything. Good videos – in walk, trot, and canter from both directions, transitions, and, ideally, hacking outside the arena – will do more for you than any flowery description. Horses should be shown shod, groomed, and in regular work; international buyers are increasingly wary of “field fresh” horses with no recent videos. Prices need to reflect both Spanish conditions and international expectations: for example, a correctly started 4-year-old PRE with decent movement and clean basic x-rays might realistically be 10,000–18,000€, while a solid amateur-friendly schoolmaster with show results can reach 25,000–40,000€ or more. For crossbreds and CDEs, pedigree, height, and competition record play a huge role in value.

To reach the best buyers, combine Spanish online marketplaces and Facebook groups with English-language ads and clear information: height in centimeters and hands, discipline, level of training, videos, location, and price. Many serious foreign buyers work with agents, so building good relationships with a few reliable intermediaries can transform your sales. Be prepared to provide vet records, allow independent pre-purchase exams, and coordinate with transporters. For international sales, buyers usually handle transport and export costs, but they will expect you to help with timing, access for the vet, and basic logistics. Seasonally, interest often spikes in spring and early autumn, when riders are planning the show season or looking ahead to winter training; August can be slower due to the heat and holidays.

Above all, transparency pays off in Spain’s horse market. Buyers, especially from abroad, are increasingly informed: they compare prices, ask for x-rays, and fact-check pedigrees. If you’re honest about a horse’s strengths and limitations, set a realistic price, and present the horse clearly in your advertising, Spain remains a very rewarding place to buy and sell – whether you’re matching a quiet hack with a weekend rider in Valencia or shipping a talented young PRE to a dressage home in Germany or the US.
