Forward / Energetic

Horses with a Forward / Energetic temperament for sale

A good Forward / Energetic horse feels like it’s already thinking about the next stride before you ask – not rushing, but offering you power, enthusiasm, and a real “let’s go” attitude. In today’s market, that kind of horse is highly sought after, especially by riders who enjoy a responsive, work-oriented partner that meets them halfway rather than needing to be kicked along every step.

When we talk about a Forward / Energetic temperament, we’re usually describing a horse that naturally moves in front of the leg, reacts quickly to aids, and has an active mind as well as an active body. These horses often come out of the stable ready to work, march out in hand, and show a consistent desire to go forward under saddle. They’re typically sensitive, quick-thinking, and can be sharp if misunderstood, but with the right rider they offer brilliant rideability and expression. Disciplines like show jumping, eventing, dressage, endurance, and working equitation often value this type, particularly at the competitive levels where time, power, and expression matter.

Market demand for Forward / Energetic horses is strong, but very dependent on rider compatibility. The same horse that thrills a confident, tactful rider can overwhelm a nervous or unbalanced one. That’s why temperament matching is critical: you’re not just buying or selling a set of gaits or a jumping record, you’re matching energy levels, sensitivity, and work ethic. Buyers looking for horses with a forward temperament are usually stepping up from a more laid-back ride and want something that helps them progress; sellers need to be realistic about how much energy and sensitivity their horse has so it ends up with a rider who enjoys that power instead of fighting it. When the match is right, these horses stay in homes longer and perform better, which is exactly what everyone wants.

Finding the right Forward / Energetic horse to buy

As a buyer, you typically search for a Forward / Energetic horse because you’re tired of nagging with your leg and riding the handbrake. Maybe you’re moving up a level in show jumping and need a horse that takes you to the fence, or you’re an ambitious amateur dressage rider who wants a horse that offers more impulsion naturally. This temperament suits riders with an independent seat and quiet hands, who enjoy a horse that reacts to light aids. If you’re still working on confidence or balance, you may want “forward-thinking” but not “over-quick,” so be honest with yourself about what level of energy you can truly enjoy.

When you go to view and test ride, look beyond the sales talk and watch how the horse behaves from the moment it leaves the stable. A genuinely forward horse will walk out with purpose, step under itself naturally on the lunge, and, under saddle, respond promptly when the rider closes the leg. You’re looking for a horse that stays in a rhythm and maintains the pace once asked, not one that rushes off, pulls, or becomes tense. In trials, ask for transitions within the gait – lengthen and collect the trot or canter – and notice if the horse offers more when you ask, then comes back without a fight. During vetting, ask your vet specifically about any physical issues that might be misread as “too much energy,” such as pain-related tension or ulcers.

For prices, in Europe and North America at the time of writing, you’ll typically see green but athletic Forward / Energetic prospects for basic riding or low-level sport starting around $8,000–$15,000. Well-started competition horses with this temperament, clean vetting, and some results often sit in the $20,000–$40,000 range. Proven sport horses with scope, show records, and rideable energy can easily move into the $50,000–$100,000+ bracket, depending on pedigree, age, and discipline. When you’re buying, ask sellers specific questions: Is the horse hotter at shows than at home? How many days a week does it need work to stay manageable? How does it react after a few days off? Does it hack alone? Red flags include sellers brushing off spookiness or strong behavior as “just energetic,” needing a lot of lunging before riding, or vague answers about why a confident rider is recommended. Green flags are consistent descriptions from trainer, groom, and current rider, videos showing the horse in different environments, and a horse that looks bright but rideable in each.

Successfully selling horses with a Forward / Energetic personality

When you’re selling a Forward / Energetic horse, your ideal buyer is usually a competent amateur or professional who appreciates sensitivity and wants a horse that helps them get the job done. These riders have an independent seat, don’t rely on the reins for balance, and enjoy a horse that reacts quickly but can still listen. They tend to have clear goals: moving up a level, improving their dressage scores, or having a horse that can cope with technical tracks or varied terrain.

In your listings, be specific about the type of energy your horse has. “Forward and sensitive, best suited to a balanced rider,” is far more helpful than “needs experienced rider” with no explanation. Mention how many days a week the horse is currently worked, how it behaves after time off, and whether it stays rideable in busy environments like shows or clinics. When showing the horse to buyers, present it honestly: let them see it come out of the stable, tack up, and warm up. If the horse is sharper on day one at a new venue, say so and explain how you manage that. During trial rides, I often ride first to demonstrate how little or how much leg and hand the horse needs, then coach the buyer through the first few minutes so they can feel the true temperament rather than be surprised.

Pricing Forward / Energetic horses should reflect not only talent but also how accessible that energy is. A talented but very hot sport horse with quirks will sit in a lower price bracket than a similarly talented, more rideable forward horse, simply because the buyer pool is smaller. Know your local market: in many regions, forward but kind amateur horses are selling very quickly and at firm prices, while ultra-sharp “pro rides” can be harder to move. Buyers at this level expect full veterinary records, video from competition or different environments, and often a chance for a second trial or lesson ride. Marketing-wise, advertise in discipline-specific groups, on reputable online marketplaces, and through trainers who have riders actively looking for forward types. Above all, be honest. Overselling a hot, sharp horse as “just enthusiastic” might get you a quick sale, but it almost always leads to a return or a disappointed buyer. Clear, accurate temperament descriptions build your reputation, attract the right riders, and give your Forward / Energetic horses the best chance of landing in homes where their power and enthusiasm are appreciated, not punished.
