1.10m horses for sale: Buying and selling 1.10m horses

The 1.10m horse sits in a very interesting sweet spot in the equestrian market: not a green youngster anymore, but not yet a high-performance specialist. When you’re buying or selling at 1.10m, you’re dealing with horses that are educated, useful, and versatile – and that makes this level one of the busiest and most competitive segments of the sport horse marketplace.

In practical terms, a 1.10m showjumper is usually competing at national level, often in the 1.00–1.20m range, sometimes stepping into small ranking classes at quieter shows. They should already understand related distances, combinations, fillers, and a bit of atmosphere. This is the level where a horse proves whether it’s a reliable partner for amateur riders, a candidate to develop for higher sport, or a straightforward “schoolmaster” for someone moving up from 90cm or 1.00m. For eventers, a horse confidently schooling 1.10m showjumping is often comfortable at 1*–2* height, which adds to their appeal.

Because of that versatility, demand for 1.10m horses is consistently strong. Many riders want something that can jump a 1.10m course today, give them mileage at shows, and still has the scope and health to potentially go further. At this level, soundness, temperament, and rideability matter just as much as scope. Buyers want horses that can cope with busy warm-up rings, slightly technical lines, and the occasional rider mistake. Sellers, in turn, are often balancing whether to invest more time bringing the horse up to 1.20m–1.30m, or to sell while the horse is in that very marketable 1.10m window.

Buying a 1.10m horse - what you need to know

When you’re buying a 1.10m horse, you’re usually looking for something “ready to go” – a horse you can take to a show next weekend and jump a proper course without drama. That’s the main attraction: the education is mostly done. The horse should know its job, jump a course in rhythm, and handle a bit of pressure. Many riders buy at 1.10m because they want to move up a level safely, or because they’re coming back to the sport and don’t want to start from scratch with a green horse.

You’ll find 1.10m horses for sale through online marketplaces, dealers, auctions, and private trainers. Online platforms are good for browsing and comparing prices, but be realistic: videos are often flattering. If you can, work through a trusted trainer or agent who understands both your riding and the current market. When you go to view a horse, ask to see it flat and jump a course around 1.10m, not just a couple of big single fences. Watch how it behaves in the warm-up, how it handles related distances, and whether it stays rideable when the jumps go up. At this height, I like to see a horse that is careful but not overly spooky, and that doesn’t lose its brain if the rider misses once or twice.

Vetting is crucial. A typical 1.10m horse is often between 6 and 12 years old, and many will have a competition record. Expect a full vetting with x‑rays; buyers at this level are increasingly cautious because these horses are not cheap. In Europe, a straightforward, amateur‑friendly 1.10m horse with mileage might range from €15,000–€35,000, depending on age, record, breeding, and temperament. In the UK and US, similar horses can easily sit between £20,000–£50,000 or $25,000–$60,000, with proven junior or amateur winners going higher. Young horses just stepping up to 1.10m with obvious scope but little record may be cheaper now but carry more risk.

Be honest with yourself about your own experience. A sharp, careful 1.10m horse that’s being sold as a 1.30m prospect may not be ideal if you’re a nervous amateur. For riders moving up from 1.00m, a slightly older, experienced horse that has seen plenty of rings is often worth paying a premium for. Red flags to watch for include inconsistent records (eliminations or frequent stops without clear explanation), vague answers about vet history, sellers unwilling to let your vet see previous reports, and horses only presented in perfect, quiet conditions. A good 1.10m horse for an amateur should be the same animal on day two as on day one of your trial.

Everything about selling 1.10m horses

When you’re selling a 1.10m horse, your main buyers are ambitious amateurs, junior riders moving up from ponies, riders returning to the sport, and professionals looking for resale or a future star already with mileage. They are usually searching for reliability and clarity: they want to know exactly what height the horse is comfortable at today, and what realistic potential it has for tomorrow. Horses that are safe, uncomplicated, and pleasant in the stable often sell faster than the ultra‑brave, quirky talent at this level.

To present your horse well, make sure it’s fit, correctly shod, and schooling the level you’re advertising. Current show videos are essential for 1.10m horses; buyers want to see full rounds, not just training clips over single fences. Include videos of flatwork, a 1.10m course, and, if relevant, a slightly bigger schooling line to show scope. Online marketplaces, social media, and competition networks are powerful, but don’t underestimate word of mouth through trainers and riders at shows. Auctions can be an option for well‑bred, eye‑catching horses, but for a reliable 1.10m schoolmaster, private sales through trainers often achieve better matches and prices.

Pricing a 1.10m horse depends on age, record, rideability, soundness, and potential. A 9‑ to 12‑year‑old that safely carries an amateur around 1.10m–1.20m with a clean vetting can justify the upper end of the range. A 6‑year‑old just debuting 1.10m with limited record will sit lower, unless it clearly has the quality for much bigger sport. Be prepared with documentation: competition records, passport details, recent shoeing and vaccination history, and any vet reports you’re willing to share. Buyers expect transparency at this level; hiding old x‑rays usually backfires.

Timing matters too. Horses marketed for 1.10m sell best just before and during the main competition season, when riders are planning their year and looking for 1.10m horses for sale that can step straight into the ring. In winter, buyers are often more selective and negotiate harder. Write honest, detailed adverts: specify the height competed, level of rider it suits, quirks (if it needs a confident rider, say so), and any limitations. The clearer you are, the more likely you are to attract the right buyers and avoid wasted trials. In the end, a well‑priced, well‑presented 1.10m horse, marketed with good videos and honest information, rarely stays on the market for long.
